There aren’t too many wine producers making a big statement in the north of England but those that have been persistent, consistent and quality-focussed, have managed to create some special products. Because of the slightly lower average temperatures, the north hasn’t been an attractive region for grape growing, but it’s certainly not impossible and that has been proved by Leventhorpe.
The site was chosen for its perfect wine growing characteristics; south facing slopes that catch lots of sun, well-drained soil, low-altitude, protection provided by mature trees, and defence from frost provided by the nearby river Aire and other bodies of water.
The result of excellent site selection and a focus on quality is fantastic wines that are widely recognised as some of the best in the country. Leventhorpe’s 2014 Seyval was given a gold award at the 2016 English & Welsh Wine of the Year Competition by a judging panel of five Masters of Wine.
Its colour is clear white. The nose has apple and pears and the mouth is slightly dry and full with sweet honey, balanced with grapefruit flavours. It’s an exciting wine which is both crisp and delicate. It truly is the perfect partner to seafood and will undoubtedly be enjoyed wherever it is consumed.
Last year, Leventhorpe was visited by the Jurade de Saint-Emillion – a group of winegrowers from the famous ‘right-bank’ appellations of Bordeaux, and all wines tasted were described as ‘excellent’ by the group who hail from one of the world’s most famous and well-respected winemaking regions.
